Satpura is of great archaeological interest too as the Satpura and Pachmari landscape inherits more than 130 rock shelters with rock paintings depicting battles, hunting, religious and social ceremonies and gatherings, as well as the normal routine daily life of the local people. Some of them have been attributed as more than 10,000 years old. Deep inside the forest are several ruins of temples and forts dating back to the 14th and 15th century when the area was primarily in habited by the local gond people.
